Move over Margaritas, this delicious Venetian classic is here ‘to untie’ your choke hold on the frozen cocktail competition! Mix yourself up some citrus deliciousness with this Drink of the Week: the Sgroppino al Limone.

Italian classics make great cocktails, don’t you think?

Who doesn’t love a good lemon sorbet? Especially when it’s lovingly drenched in vodka and Prosecco. The Sgroppino is a summer favorite in Venice, Italy where temperatures dance in the mid-80’s during the summer months. This drink was made and passed around by the aunts and uncles at some summer family dinners when I was a kid. Of course, I couldn’t enjoy it back them, but now I find myself sipping on them in the southern summer heat on the back porch as early as mid-April.

While it is undervalued in restaurants and cocktail bars here in the US, the Sgroppino al Limone is a popular Italian favorite as a common palate cleanser that makes for a wonderful dessert drink. In Italy, ‘digestivos’ are commonly drunk after a meal, but this digestivo is so fresh and clean that it makes a great companion for a warm sunny day. They help to refresh you after the meal and restore you in the heat a bit. Here’s how to whisk yourself up this delicious little treat.

 

Sgroppino al Limone

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1 Cup Chilled Prosecco
  • 2 Tbs Chilled Vodka
  • 1/3 Cup Lemon Sorbet
  • 1/4 Tsp Fresh Chopped Mint
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Small bowl or pitcher
  • Whisk
  • Champagne Flutes

 

Preparation

Sgroppino al Limone: Chill champagne flutes in the freezer for 4 to 5 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk together the Prosecco, Vodka, and lemon sorbet in a small chilled bowl or pitcher. Remember to not whisk too much or it will become too liquidy. Remove glasses from freezer, pour in the Sgroppino mixture, and garnish with mint. For extra lemony flavor, add a spoonful of the lemon sorbet on top. Divertiti (Enjoy yourself)!

This drink of the week recpe comes from the folks behind the bar at Char No 4, Brooklyn’s home of American Whiskey, where they sure know how to make a killer bourbon cocktail, like this Nor’easter.

The Nor’easter cocktail puts a Southern twist on one of our past Drinks of the Week the Dark and Stormy.

Let this delicious beauty accompany your next Netflix session as you wait out the cold weather this winter.

 

The Nor’easter Cocktail

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 4 Ounces Bourbon
  • 2 Ounces Ginger Beer
  • 1 Ounce Maple Syrup
  • 1+ Ounce Lime Juice (To Taste)
  • Lime Wedge
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Whiskey Glass

 

Preparation

The Nor’easter cocktail: Combine Maple syrup, lime juice, bourbon and ginger ale in a cocktail shaker (Tip: If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can use a Tervis Tumbler with a tight lid to do this step). Shake it up until well mixed. Chill in the freezer for 2–4 minutes, until very cold. Strain and pour over ice, then garnish with a fresh lime wedge. Enjoy!

How to make an Old Fashioned Hot Toddy with lemon and honey

Curling up with a nice Hot Toddy is one great way to beat the cold this winter, and to watch your favorite Harry Potter movie(s). It is also a favorite cold remedy for its soothing effect on those who are feeling achy and congested.

In fact, hot toddies have been used for decades as a folk remedy for the common cold. Why you might ask? Well, alcohol dilates your blood vessels, making it easier for your mucous membranes to fight off your cold/infection. Combined with the steam power of hot tea, lemon, and honey you have a deliciously sippable decongestant.

Hot Toddies have been a family natural cure-all for generations. My mom makes these whenever someone in the house has a chest cold or a sore throat. It’s kind of like magic. The tea warms you up while the honey and whiskey soothes and helps you sleep.

According to the Hot Toddy experts, the type of whiskey you should use depends on your symptoms: Use bourbon if you’re just treating congestion or a sore throat, or use Irish whiskey if you have a persistent cough.

I prefer my hot toddies to be made using a strong black tea. Irish or Scottish Breakfast tea is heaven with a splash of Jameson, but Earl Grey makes a good choice as well. This is just my go to, but many types of tea pair very nicely with Whiskey. Ginger tea adds an extra spice palate to the mixture that will warm you up, especially when you pair it with an American whiskey.

Old Fashioned Hot Toddy

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Black Tea Bags
  • 1½ Cups Boiling Water
  • 1-2 Ounces of Whiskey
  • 4 Tbsp of Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1-2 Tbsp of Honey (For Optional Sweetness)

Glassware You’ll Need:

  • Coffee Mug
  • Tea Cup

 

Preparation

Old Fashioned Hot Toddy: Bring water to a boil in a kettle, or place the mug in the microwave for 1 to 1½ minutes. Remove the water from the heat, and add in the tea bags. Allow the tea to steep for about 3-5 minutes, then add whiskey and lemon juice. Stir together, and add honey to taste. Enjoy!

New Saliva Test detects date rape drugs

New simple saliva test detects ‘date rape’ drugs in minutes

The New Test Can Detect 6 Date Rape Drugs

Researchers at Loughborough University, UK and the University of Cordoba, Spain have developed a simple saliva test that can differentiate between victims of the ‘date rape’ drug GHB and those poisoned by counterfeit alcohol.

The saliva test detects the presence of methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, propan 1,3 glycol and -hydroxybutyric acid (GHB). GHB is a central nervous system depressant that is slipped into a victim’s drink to numb their senses or render them unconscious. Unlike other ‘date rape’ drugs that can last in the victim’s system for up to 72 hours, GHB leaves a victim’s body within 12 hours of being taken.

Methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, and propan 1,3 glycol are industrial chemicals sometimes found in counterfeit alcohol. These substances can have numerous harmful effects on the victim, and early detection is vital for gathering evidence in cases of drug-facilitated assault or robbery.

“This new test looks for alcohols and poisons in human saliva,” explained Loughborough Professor of Analytical Science, Paul Thomas. Scientists behind the new method claim it will be as simple as taking a temperature with a thermometer. This new test will allow medical staff to quickly diagnosis GHB or alcohol poisoning in apparently drunk patients.

The researchers are now working towards clinical trials in hospital emergency departments, where the test will be put through its paces in a real-life setting.

The Dark and Stormy combines spicy ginger beer and dark rum together for a taste sensation that makes your taste buds happy. The Gosling Brothers loved it so much they trademarked the name Dark ‘N’ Stormy, and created Gosling Black Seal Rum as the perfect pair for ginger beer.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 5 Ounces Ginger Beer
  • 2 Ounce Dark Rum
  • 3 Dashes Lime Bitters
  • Lime Wedge for Garnish
Glassware You’ll Need:

  • Highball

Preparation

Dark and Stormy: Fill highball glass with ice. Combine the bitters with ginger beer, and pour into the glass. Next, slowly pour the dark rum on top to create the “stormy” effect. Lastly, stir to combine and garnish with lime wedge. You can squeeze the lime wedge into the drink for an extra limey kick.
