There’s nothing that quite spells out Fall and Winter like good ol’Hot Buttered Rum. This classic recipe for Hot Buttered Rum will surely brighten up the coldest nights.

When you think of cold Fall and Winter nights, Hot Buttered Rum often comes to mind [at least if you grew up in the cold nights of the Northern States that is]. Hot mulled ciders and buttered rums are pretty much a staple nightcap in some places.

Butter and rum might seem like an odd combination, but this classic drink has been enjoyed in the Great White North for a very long time and it sometimes gets a bum rap. It’s not everyone’s cup of Hot Toddy. Nonetheless, it has been and will continue to be a favorite of cold weather lovers everywhere.

We are definitely not fans of the recipes that have a dollop of butter plopped right in the mug. That just spells out a goopy mess of ick as you are sipping. It’s why we definitely recommend using a batter instead of straight butter. This recipe for Hot Buttered Rum Batter comes to us from Tracy at The Kitchen is My Playground. It is a much better way to make this hot concoction.

When making hot buttered rum, using a dark or spiced rum is the key. Light rum doesn’t do this drink justice. If you find a light rum that works, I’d really like to know about it. We are always open to experimenting with ingredients, but, for now, we’ll stick with tradition. This is how you make classic Hot Buttered Rum!

 

Buttered Rum Batter

Yields: 1 Container

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1 Stick Softened Unsalted Butter
  • ¾ Cup Brown Sugar
  • ¼ to ½ Teaspoons Ground Cinnamon
  • ⅛ to ¼ Teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • Small Pinch Ground Cloves
  • Small Pinch Fleur de sel, Kosher, or Sea Salt

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Measuring Spoons/Cups
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Spoon or Fork
  • Air Tight Storage Container

 

Hot Buttered Rum

Yields: 1 Serving

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces Dark or Spiced Rum
  • 6 Ounces Boiling Water
  • 1 Tablespoon Hot Buttered Rum Batter
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick for Garnish
  • Whipped Creme [Optional]

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Mug or Irish Coffee Glasses
  • Spoon

 

Preparation

Make the Batter: Mash together softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in a mixing bowl with a spoon or fork, until well combined. Place into storage container for later or use immediately for hot buttered rums.

Hot Buttered Rum: Add batter and rum to a mug. Pour in hot water and stir to combine. Go ahead and use a cinnamon stick to stir it and then stick it in as a garnish. Top with whipped creme if desired and enjoy!
