Springtime provides inspiration for art, poetry, and even cocktails! The fresh citrus taste of this bright sunny-colored spring cocktail will have you saying “Salute” to this Mint Limonata Julep.

Like its cousin, the Mint Julep, the Limonata Julep is a mix of bourbon, fresh mint, and our homemade simple syrup but with the added touch of Limoncello. The combination of ingredients makes this Julep cocktail the perfect after dinner drink.

Limoncello is an Italian lemon flavored after dinner liquor made from the zest of lemons from the Amalfi coast. This lemon liquor is traditionally served icy-cold, as Limoncello is kept in the in the freezer. Limoncello varies in proof depending on the base liquor you soak the lemons in, which ranges from Vodka to Everclear.

Some commercial Limoncellos are very sweet, which is why many folks like to make Limoncello at home. The process of making Limoncello takes a few weeks, but making it at home allows you to controll the sugar content and lemony essence, which is well worth the work.

Bourbon and Limoncello might seem like the Odd Couple when it comes to Spirits, but when you put them together the taste will surprise you. Maker’s Mark and homemade Limoncello is a great combination, which is why we used it to make this cocktail.

We used Meyer lemons, which are sweeter than regular lemons, to make Limoncello so we could cut back on the amount of simple syrup If you use a lemoncello made from more acidic lemons, add 1 ounce simple syrup.

This is how you make a Mint Limonata Julep!

Mint Limonata Julep

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces Limoncello
  • 1 Ounce Bourbon
  • ½ Ounce Simple Syrup
  • 2 to 5 Fresh Fresh Mint Leaves
  • Meyer Lemon for Garnish
  • Mint Sprigs for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Stemless Wine Glass
  • Muddler or Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Mint Limonata Julep: Press a few mint leaves against the bottom of a glass with the back of a spoon, and pour the bourbon on top. Add ice and simple syrup to glass. Top with lemoncello and stir together. Squeeze and drop a wedge of meyer lemon into each glass and garnish with a sprig or two of fresh mint. Enjoy!
