The Azalea Festival is upon us again here in the Port City, and we have a lovely new addition to our list of cocktails for Azalea Fest: The Airlie Gardens Martini.

If you’ve never been to Airlie Gardens, we highly suggest you take a visit. This garden showcases seasonal blossoms, historic and modern sculptures, hosts a summer concert series, and has the most enchanting Christmas light display in the county.

This cocktail takes all the elegance of Airlie and blends it into a delicious pear and lavender gin martini that is perfect for a garden party.

Now if you’re a diehard member of Team Vodka Martini, this martini might not be for you, since the main spirit is gin. Unfortunately, the vodka version just doesn’t have the same mouthfeel or caliber of flavor of its gin counterpart.

But don’t worry Team Vodka Martini, we have quite a few vodka martinis on our blog to satisfy your martini preferences.

Pear juice is by far the most luscious juice I’ve ever had. I have been blown away by the pear cocktails I’ve had in the past few months. Seriously, go try the Pear Necessities cocktail at the Blind Elephant, it is phenomenal.

These cocktails served as an inspiration for the Airlie Gardens Martini. I wanted to create a pear-citrus martini that blended a floral note to it. That is where the lavender came in.

The gorgeous purple hue of the lavender garnish and simple sweetness of lavender honey syrup gives this martini the sophistication you’d want from a garden party cocktail.

This is how you make an Airlie Gardens Martini!

Airlie Gardens Martini

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces Martin Miller’s Gin
  • 1 Ounce Organic Pear Juice
  • ½ Ounce Fresh Grapefruit Juice
  • ½ Ounce Lavender Honey Syrup
  • Lavender for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Cocktail Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker

 

Preparation

Airlie Gardens Martini: Add Martin Miller’s gin, pear juice, grapefruit juice, and lavender honey syrup to cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well until completely chilled. Pour into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with lavender. Enjoy!

This year’s NC Azalea Festival is right around the corner, which means we’ve been hard at work coming up with some cocktails for Azalea Fest. Today’s star cocktail is a pomegranate mojito that is as pretty as an Azalea Belle.

Pomegranates are a classic Winter season fruit, but did you know pomegranates have a Spring season too? While the Californian pomegranate season ends in February, down in the Southern Hemisphere Pomegranate season just got started.

Which means you can enjoy these pomegranate mojitos practically all year round! But we don’t really need a reason to experiment with mojitos, now do we?

Rum cocktails are pretty popular, after all there are dozens of cocktail recipes that use rum. These cocktails often invoke the flavors of tropical islands or the pirate days of yore, but this Pomegranate Mojito is a little different.

This mojito recipe uses pomegranate seeds to infuse the cocktail with a whole lot of pomegranate flavor, which adds something extra to the citrus kick you expect from a mojito. You can play around with the sweetness of this cocktail as well. Like it a little sweet? Stick to one ounce of simple syrup. Like it super sweet? Go for two ounces, but be careful or all that sweetness could leave you with a nasty hangover.

Mojitos are typically a messy cocktail. It’s why many bartenders absolutely hate making them. You can literally type the words “Bartenders Hate” in Google and Mojitos will pop up in the top 5 searches. Do it, it’s kind of funny.

While this delicious combination of rum and muddled mint, sugar [or simple syrup], and lime juice might be the bane of your bartender’s existence, the outcome is loved by many, and is easy to make at home.

This is how you make a Pomegranate Mojito!

Pomegranate Mojito

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 3 Ounces White Rum
  • 2 Ounces Simple Syrup
  • 1 Ounce Fresh Lime Juice
  • ¼ Cup Pomegranate Seeds
  • 2 to 5 Fresh Fresh Mint Leaves
  • Soda Water [We recommend San Pellegrino]
  • Lime Wedge for Garnish
  • Mint Sprigs for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Highball Glass
  • Muddler or Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Pomegranate Mojito: At the bottom of a highball glass, muddle a couple of mint leaves, about 2 tablesoons of the pomegranate seeds, lime juice, and simple syrup together with a Muddler or a long spoon.

Pour white rum overtop, and add ice. Top with soda water, like San Pellegrino, and stir. Garnish with lime, mint, and a few more pomegranate seeds. Enjoy!

Drink of the week: The Azalea Belle

The North Carolina Azalea Festival takes place here in Wilmington every year, and we crafted a Drink of the Week that captures the heart of the festival: The Azalea Belle.

One of the Azalea festival’s most popular traditions are the Azalea Belles, young ladies that wear hoop-skirted antebellum dresses and serve as hostesses and guides during the Azalea Festival Garden Tour.

This tradition has been going on for over 40 years and has become one of the most iconic images of the festival and of the Port City.

We tried to capture that essence of bright colorful dresses and Southern hospitality in a combination of Grapefruit juice and Gin, with just a touch of extra herbal sweetness from a homemade Rosemary Simple Syrup.

Azalea Belle

Yields: 2 Servings
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 5 Ounces Gin
  • 5 Ounces Pink Grapefruit Juice
  • 1.5 Teaspoon Rosemary Simple Syrup
  • Grapefruit Wedge for Garnish
  • Rosemary Sprig for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Stemless Wine Glass
  • Snifter Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker or Tumbler

 

Preparation

The Azalea Belle: Add a few ice cubes to stemless wine glasses, and set aside. Fill shaker half way with ice, and add in gin, juice, and 1.5 teaspoon of the rosemary syrup.

Shake it all up, and strain into glasses. Finish the drink off with a section of grapefruit and a rosemary sprig for garnish. Enjoy!
