With Christmas right around the corner, I’m sure you’ve seen your local grocery store stocked with Eggnog for weeks now. You either can’t wait to drink more of that thick, creamy concoction, or you’re starting to get tired of it. Well, you if fall into the latter category, keep reading because the Tom and Jerry cocktail might just be the perfect solution for you.

The Tom and Jerry cocktail puts a twist on classic eggnog by using rum and cognac instead of bourbon and by serving the cocktail hot. Additionally, while eggnog is very thick, the Tom and Jerry has a lighter, whipped texture.

Although the Tom and Jerry does require time to prepare, it is well worth the effort. Once you have it all concocted, if you are wanting to be completely authentic, you can serve it in Tom and Jerry mugs (gold trimmed mugs with Tom and Jerry on the front).

Tom and Jerry Cocktail

Yields: 4 Servings

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 8 ounces Tom & Jerry Batter
  • 4 Ounces Cognac
  • 4 Ounces Aged Rum
  • 8 Ounces Hot Whole Milk
  • Cinnamon for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Irish Coffee Mugs or Tom and Jerry Mugs (if you have them)
  • Spoon

 

Tom and Jerry Batter

Ingredients You’ll Need:

    • 3 Eggs
    • 1 Cup Powdered Sugar
    • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
    • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/8 teaspoon ground clove
    • Nutmeg to garnish
Items You’ll Need:

  • Mixing bowls
  • Wisk
  • Spoon

 

Preparation

Tom and Jerry Batter: Separate the eggs and then beat the whites until they stiffen and form peaks (a mixer may be used). In a separate bowl, mix together the yolks, sugar, and spices. Fold the egg whites into the yolks. The batter can be made the night before to let the spices meld.

Tom and Jerry Cocktail: To prepare the drink, place 1 tablespoon of batter in a mug. Add 1 ounce each of cognac and rum to the mug (stir to avoid curdling). Finally, add hot milk to fill the mug and stir until frothy. (Milk and water can also be mixed in a 50/50 ratio.) Top with nutmeg. Creates four servings.

Super Tasty Irish Coffee to get you through Winter

As soon as Christmas lights go up, we whip out the hot cocktails. From toddies to coffee cocktails, winter opens up a new world of warm and sometimes chocolatey cocktails, and this Irish Coffee recipe is one of my absolute favorites.

The Irish coffees I’ve had in the past have always been made with either dark or medium roast coffee. Sometimes, I think the dark roast is better offset by sweet whipped cream than the medium roast. So for this recipe, I’ll give you the option to try it with either dark or medium roast. I typically like my coffee high test, but I experimented using a dark chocolate infused coffee and it was phenomenal.

Floating heavy cream on Irish coffee can take some practice to make it “picture perfect.” So don’t fret if it doesn’t look like the pictures do. If the heavy cream is whipped properly it will float. It took me a few tries to get it right and for it to not just fall in like a creamer. To do it, gently spoon on the whipping cream, making sure to get it about an inch thick. You can do it, I believe in you.

Now let’s show you how you make this super tasty Irish Coffee recipe!

Irish Coffee

Yields: 1 Serving

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 4 Ounces Fresh Coffee [Either Medium or Dark Roast]
  • 1¾ Ounces Irish Whiskey
  • 1 Tablespoon Brown Sugar
  • Heavy Cream, Lightly Whipped
  • Chocolate Powder for Garnish
  • Cinnamon Stick for Garnish

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Irish Coffee Glass
  • Spoon

Preparation

Irish Coffee: Pour piping hot [medium or dark roast] coffee into an Irish Coffee glass until it is about ¾ of the way full. Sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, and stir until completely dissolved. Add in the whiskey, and float the lightly whipped heavy cream to top it off. Garnish with chocolate powder and cinnamon stick if desired. Enjoy!

There’s nothing that quite spells out Fall and Winter like good ol’Hot Buttered Rum. This classic recipe for Hot Buttered Rum will surely brighten up the coldest nights.

When you think of cold Fall and Winter nights, Hot Buttered Rum often comes to mind [at least if you grew up in the cold nights of the Northern States that is]. Hot mulled ciders and buttered rums are pretty much a staple nightcap in some places.

Butter and rum might seem like an odd combination, but this classic drink has been enjoyed in the Great White North for a very long time and it sometimes gets a bum rap. It’s not everyone’s cup of Hot Toddy. Nonetheless, it has been and will continue to be a favorite of cold weather lovers everywhere.

We are definitely not fans of the recipes that have a dollop of butter plopped right in the mug. That just spells out a goopy mess of ick as you are sipping. It’s why we definitely recommend using a batter instead of straight butter. This recipe for Hot Buttered Rum Batter comes to us from Tracy at The Kitchen is My Playground. It is a much better way to make this hot concoction.

When making hot buttered rum, using a dark or spiced rum is the key. Light rum doesn’t do this drink justice. If you find a light rum that works, I’d really like to know about it. We are always open to experimenting with ingredients, but, for now, we’ll stick with tradition. If you’ve never tried hot buttered rum, keep an open mind and you might find yourself a new nightcap to enjoy all Fall and Winter long.

This is how you make classic Hot Buttered Rum!

 

Buttered Rum Batter

Yields: 1 Container

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1 Stick Softened Unsalted Butter
  • ¾ Cup Brown Sugar
  • ¼ to ½ Teaspoons Ground Cinnamon
  • ⅛ to ¼ Teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • Small Pinch Ground Cloves
  • Small Pinch Fleur de sel, Kosher, or Sea Salt

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Measuring Spoons/Cups
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Spoon or Fork
  • Air Tight Storage Container

 

Hot Buttered Rum

Yields: 1 Serving

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces Dark or Spiced Rum
  • 6 Ounces Boiling Water
  • 1 Tablespoon Hot Buttered Rum Batter
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick for Garnish
  • Whipped Creme [Optional]

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Mug or Irish Coffee Glasses
  • Spoon

 

Preparation

Make the Batter: Mash together softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in a mixing bowl with a spoon or fork, until well combined. Place into storage container for later or use immediately for hot buttered rums.

Hot Buttered Rum: Add batter and rum to a mug. Pour in hot water and stir to combine. Go ahead and use a cinnamon stick to stir it and then stick it in as a garnish. Top with whipped creme if desired and enjoy!
