Fun fact for the day: I can speak German. Well, as much German as you can learn in a few semesters in University. Which came in handy for mixing up this Basil Gin Smash cocktail.

The Basil Gin Smash cocktail was first created by Jörg Meyer in his bar called The Lion in Hamburg, Germany back in 2008. As you can imagine, many of its online recipes are in German.

That’s where my awesome translating-ninja-skills came into play to translate this German recipe for our mostly American audience. You’re so welcome!

I find it fitting that we begin the month of March with such a green cocktail. It would make a delicious alternative so some of our other Saint Patrick’s day themed cocktails from the previous year. Especially, since it’s a gin cocktail and not an Irish whiskey cocktail.

This cocktail recipe is made using Hendrick’s Gin, lemon juice, fresh basil, and sugar syrup [a.k.a simple syrup which we have a fantastic recipe for]. If you want to use the gin Jörg recommends for this cocktail, you’ll want to find yourself a bottle of Rutte Dry Gin.

There is a mild bit of contention over crafting the Basil Gin Smash, as its creator wants you to muddle basil for this cocktail. Apparently, that is not well received by everyone. Over muddling can make the cocktail very herby, and it might be my German ancestors working through me, but I rather like that.

The cucumber essence of Hendrick’s Gin and the freshness of the lemon juice and basil create a great balance in this cocktail, which is key. You might need to adjust it to find the right balance for your tastes.

This Basil Gin Smash cocktail is a simple, but elegant cocktail that I plan on making more of in the future. Cheers!

Basil Gin Smash

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces Hendrick’s Gin
  • 1 Ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • ⅔ Ounce Simple Syrup
  • 15 to 20 Fresh Basil Leaves
  • Fresh Basil for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Coupe or Rocks Glass
  • Cocktail or Boston Shaker
  • Muddler or Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Basil Gin Smash: In the bottom of your shaker, dry muddle a handful of basil leaves. Next, add in gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and ice. Shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds. Double strain cocktail into a coupe [for nicer presentation] or a rocks glass. Garnish cocktail with fresh basil leaves. Enjoy!

Margarita Day might be over, but we’re still feeling in the spirit! This margarita recipe blends the flavors of strawberries, cranberries and raspberries into one Ultimate Red Berry Margarita.

We have never met a margarita that we don’t like, but this Ultimate Red Berry Margarita is one you’ll fall head over heels for! It’s becoming a contender for one of our best flavored Margaritas yet.

Now, we couldn’t call this an Ultimate Margarita recipe without a good blend of liquors. For this recipe, we decided to use Patrón Silver Tequila, Cointreau, and Chambord; to which we added a mixture of cranberry and lime juices and our homemade Red Berry Simple Syrup.

The Red Berry Simple Syrup is the star of the show in this margarita recipe. It’s a delicious combination of strawberries, cranberries, and raspberries that is super easy to make.

Once you mix it together with the Patrón, Cointreau, and Chambord, you’ll understand why we really love this Red Berry Margarita!

Frozen cocktails are not everyone’s shot of whiskey. Some people like their margaritas on the rocks. We did this margarita over crushed ice, to give it the illusion of a frozen cocktail without having to break out the old blender.

This is how you make an Ultimate Red Berry Margarita!

Red Berry Margarita

Yields: 2 Servings
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 4 Ounces Patrón Silver Tequila
  • 1½ Ounce Cointreau
  • 1½ Ounce Raspberry Liqueur
  • 2 Ounces Cranberry Juice
  • 1 Ounce Fresh Lime Juice
  • 2 Ounces Red Berry Simple Syrup
  • Raspberries for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Cocktail Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Muddler or Bar Spoon

 

Red Berry Simple Syrup

Yields: 2 Servings
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1 Ounce Water
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ⅓ cup Raspberries
  • ⅓ cup Cranberries
  • ⅓ cup Sliced Strawberries
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Medium Saucepan
  • Strainer
  • Container

 

Preparation

Red Berry Simple Syrup: Add ingredients into a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook 4-5 minutes until berries have softened and sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool completely. Strain into container and set aside. Discard the waste into a bin.

Red Berry Margarita: Add Patrón, Cointreau, raspberry Liqueur, lime and cranberry juices, and red berry simple syrup to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until chilled. Strain into rocks glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with raspberries. Enjoy!

If you haven’t discovered by now, I am slowly becoming a fan of Gin. The last few gin cocktails we’ve covered took me by surprise. They can be quite delicious, and this Rosemary Citrus Gin and Tonic recipe is a contender.

Gin and Tonics are some of the easiest cocktails you can make. But they can also get a little bland after a while – unless you are willing to experiment.

I first came across the Rosemary Citrus Gin and Tonic from a recipe on Parsnip and Pastries. Their recipe uses Tropicana Tangerine Lemonade, which is loaded with extra sugar that can cause a nasty hangover. For our take on this cocktail, we used a slightly different blend of fresh citrus juices to cut out the added sugar, and paired it with a London Dry Gin and fresh rosemary.

I like my gin and tonics made with London Dry Gin. It’s one of the most popular types of gin around, and it’s not very sweet. That allows the sugar from the citrus juices of our Rosemary Citrus Gin and Tonic to be the star player of this cocktail. Beefeater is a great option if you are new to London Dry gins. I also find it blends well with tonic water, such as Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water.

Rosemary and citrus are a refreshing combination of flavors. They give this cocktail a bright taste, which is perfect for this time of year.

Our Rosemary Citrus Gin and Tonic uses a blend of lemon, white grapefruit, orange, and clementine juices that we muddle with rosemary. We get a box of fresh oranges and grapefruits sent to my house every year by a family friend that lives in Florida. We’d never be able to eat all of them if we tried, so we save a couple large ones just for juicing which works perfectly with this cocktail.

So when I say fresh squeezed ingredients, I really mean it.

Rosemary Citrus Gin & Tonic

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces London Dry Gin
  • 3 Ounces Tonic Water
  • ½ Ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1 Ounce Fresh White Grapefruit Juice
  • 1 Ounce Fresh Orange Juice
  • 1 Large Sprig Fresh Rosemary
  • Halved Clementine
  • Sprig of Rosemary for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Cocktail Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Muddler or Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Rosemary Citrus Gin & Tonic: Muddle halved clementine with a large sprig of rosemary in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Next, add in the gin, citrus juices, and ice. Shake together vigorously until chilled. Strain into cocktail glasses and top with tonic water. Garnish with fresh rosemary sprig. Enjoy!

Raspberries! If you don’t hear Carol Channing’s voice in your head when you hear that word, you just aren’t saying it right.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we’ve been trying all kinds of cocktail recipes that embody that Valentine’s spirit. This Raspberry Blush cocktail is one of those fancy finds.

While vodka is one of the biggest spirits featured in many Valentine’s Day cocktails, we are breaking away from convention by going with gin. For the Raspberry Blush cocktail, you will need a New-Wave Gin, like Hendricks or Martin Miller’s, to accentuate the fruity flavors that make up this scrumptious cocktail.

Diana from Anne of Green Gables was right when she said, “I didn’t know raspberry cordial was so nice.” Neither did I, and it’s also easy to make. All you need are raspberries, lime juice, sugar, and water. Check out this raspberry cordial recipe from Kate MacDonald’s Anne of Green Gables cookbook.

I know sugar or salt rims can be a bit messy and are associated with “girly” drinks, but they really add something to the cocktail’s presentation. Red, pink, white, or a mix of the three would make great choices for giving this cocktail a Valentine’s touch.

The Raspberry Blush is bursting with flavor. The raspberry, lime, and lychee create an exotic taste that will have your mouth falling in love. Pair it with a cucumber gin like Hendrick’s, and you’ve got yourself one damn good cocktail!

Raspberry Blush

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1½ Ounces Gin
  • ½ Ounce Raspberry Cordial
  • 1 Ounce Lime Juice
  • 2½ Ounces Lychee Juice
  • Raspberries for Garnish
  • Color Sugar for Rims [Optional]
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Cocktail Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Bar Spoon

Preparation

Sugar Rims: Fill a small plate with superfine sugar, making sure the sugar on the plate is thick enough to cover the rim of your glass. Run a lemon or lime wedge along the rim of the glass. Dip rim into the sugar to evenly coat. Shake off excess and set aside in the fridge to chill.

Raspberry Blush: Add gin, raspberry cordial, lime juice and Lychee juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for about 30 seconds, or until chilled. Pour into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with chilled or frozen raspberries. Enjoy!

Don’t you just love to experiment with cocktail recipes? We sure do! And when given a delicious bit of inspiration, like the Cherry Whiskey Smash by Jessica from How Sweet It Is, we end up with gems like our Cherry Bourbon Smash.

Now before we go any further, I say try the original before trying our variation on the recipe. You might find you like the Whiskey version better than the Bourbon version, and that is perfectly fine. If you are on the bourbon train like me, let’s get into it.

I’ve been on a bit of a Jim Beam kick recently. It could be because I’ve been enjoying some hot toddies this winter, and Jim works really well with this new tea I bought at Teavana. When I came across the Cherry Whiskey Smash recipe, I thought it might taste good with Jim instead of Jack.

Cherry cocktails sometimes taste like cough syrup to me, which is why I suggest tart cherry juice instead of the sweet variety. It will help balance out the sweetness of the Amaretto and Cherry Coke.

If you’re not a Jim fan, I won’t hold it against you. Everyone’s tastes are different. This is a recipe I would use this recipe when you have cheap bourbon that you want to doctor up the taste. I also consider it a Valentine’s day cocktail option that isn’t so frilly.

  • 1 Ounce Bourbon
  • 1 Ounce Tart Cherry Juice
  • ½ Ounce Amaretto

  • Maraschino Cherries for Garnish

The French Ginger Cocktail

If you appreciate the citrusy-sweet flavor of a French Blonde cocktail, you are going to love her little redheaded sister.

Gin cocktails, like this French Ginger, have a lot of herbal-floral flavor combinations. They can be sweet, tart, tangy, and even bubbly. While gin might not be everyone’s favorite spirit, the flavors of this French Ginger cocktail might have you rethinking your dislike of gin.

What makes the flavor palate of the French Ginger cocktail so appealing is its balance. Like it’s sister the French Blonde, the French Ginger blends the herbal qualities of elderflower liqueur and gin and the citrusy bite of Lillet Blanc [White Lillet] and lemon bitters with the sweetness of fresh grapefruit juice, but with the added kick of ginger liqueur.

If you’ve never tried elderflower liqueur, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by its delightful floral notes. It is used in many different cocktails and pairs very well with dry champagnes and gins. It also helps to even out the flavors of the White Lillet, grapefruit juice, and ginger liqueur. It also goes really well with rosemary, but that’s a cocktail for another day.

St. Germain is a very popular brand of elderflower liqueur with a $30+ price tag, so it’s definitely on my splurge list. If your local liquor/ABC store carries mini bottles of it, that’s a great way to try it without breaking the bank. One mini bottle has enough elderflower liqueur for about two French Ginger cocktails.

Enjoy this cocktail all year round neat or over ice.

The French Ginger

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • ½ Ounce St. Germain
  • ½ Ounce Ginger Liqueur
  • 1 Ounce London Dry Gin

  • 2 Ounces Fresh Grapefruit Juice
  • Few Dashes Lemon Bitters
  • Grapefruit Section for Garnish

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Rocks Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker

Preparation

French Ginger Cocktail: Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until perfectly chilled [about 30 seconds]. Strain over ice into a Rocks glass. Garnish with grapefruit section and enjoy.

We wanted to do a little something different for National Crème de Menthe Day [09.15.16]. Half a step away from being a Mojito, this Minty Lime Refresher was adapted from a recipe from Better Homes and Gardens.

If you wanted to try a crème de menthe cocktail that wasn’t your typical grasshopper, well you are in luck. This simple rum cocktail is right up your alley. With only a few ingredients, this cocktail takes very little time to make, but is so delicious to drink.

Better Homes and Gardens recipe was not very specific as to the bottling for this recipe, so we took our own liberties with the mix. For the rum, we used some El Dorado White Rum and mixed it with some freshly squeezed lime juice and used up what was left in the container of our homemade simple syrup.

Now, this cocktail could really go two ways depending on the color crème de menthe you choose to use. If you’d like your cocktail to have a minty green color, be sure to use a brand that has a green crème de menthe, otherwise, you can use white crème de menthe for a frosty looking cocktail. There are a few brands of crème de menthe out there, DeKuyper is rather popular, or you can be adventurous and try to make your own crème de menthe at home. We opted for bottled this time.

From our last couple of experiments with rum drinks, I have come to actually really like rum cocktails. I wasn’t always the biggest fan of it, but I realized it was more of what I was drinking that I didn’t like than it was the actual rum. The more complex a drink is, the less I tend to like it. Sometimes it the more simple cocktails that turn out to be the best.

Now let’s show you how you make a Minty Lime Refresher!

 

Minty Lime Refresher

Yields: 1 Serving

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1½ Ounces White Rum
  • 2 Ounces Fresh Lime Juice
  • ¾ Ounce Simple Syrup
  • 1 Ounce San Pellegrino Sparkling Water
  • Splash of Crème de Menthe [White or Green]
  • Mint Sprigs for Garnish

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Rocks Glasses
  • Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Minty Lime Refresher: Add rum, lime juice, and simple syrup to a glass filled with ice. Give it a stir and top with San Pellegrino. Add a splash of crème de menthe and stir to combine. ***Use green crème de menthe if you’d like to give your cocktail a minty green hue. Garnish cocktail with a sprig of mint and enjoy!

Drink of the week: Clover Club Cocktail

The Clover Club cocktail is probably one of the most interesting on our list of Drink of the Week cocktails. This Philly classic cocktail recipe comes to us from super bartender Julie Reiner of the Clover Club in New York.

The Clover Club is a pre-Prohibition cocktail that was named for the Clover Club of Philadelphia, a men’s club for established gentlemen, like William Butler Yeats, where the cocktail was served until the onset of Prohibition. It has had a recent resurgence thanks to the work of Julie Reiner. This cocktail is served neat, meaning it is chilled during preparation and not served over ice.

This drink fell out of popularity mostly for its use of raw egg to add froth. I, for one, can agree that the use of raw egg in a cocktail can be a real turn off. Yet, you are in luck. I adapted Reiner’s recipe and make the egg white completely optional, much like how I prepare a Whiskey Sour.

While the cocktail mainly uses Gin and some raspberry flavoring agent [in this recipe the jam], this recipe can also be made with vodka or tequila if you so choose. I don’t know how well egg white would go over with tequila, though. Reiner suggests using Tanqueray or Beefeater gin for her recipe, and we just so happen to agree with using Beefeater.

Don’t like the idea of using jam in your cocktail? You can substitute 1/2 ounce Raspberry syrup for the jam. It might sound weird using jam in a cocktail, but we recommend giving it the old College try.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1½ Ounces Gin
  • ½ Ounce Dry Vermouth
  • 3/4 Ounce Lemon Juice
  • 1 Teaspoon Raspberry Jam
  • 1/4 Ounce Egg White [optional]**
  • Mint Sprig for Garnish**
  • Raspberry Skewer for Garnish**

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Coupe Glasses
  • Cocktail Shaker

 

Preparation

The Clover Club: Add all the ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Shake, and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a skewer of raspberries or mint sprig. Enjoy!

February 22nd is National Margarita Day! So what better way to celebrate Margarita Day than with this Classic Margarita Recipe?

Ah, margaritas! How we love you. They are tangy, tasty, and damn right yummy. And there are so many different variations on this frozen favorite, but nothing quite beats that classic lime margarita taste.

For the longest time, margaritas were the only way I could drink tequila. It is not my favorite liqour, and I don’t think it ever really will be. If it’s taste is not masked in the cocktail, I just can’t drink it.

If tequila isn’t your shot of whiskey either, try drinking it is in a Grapefruit Margarita or a Paloma. The fruity tastes of these cocktails really mask the flavor of the tequila. Especially if you use a cheaper tequila, which taste like feet.

We serve this margarita up two ways for those who like it on the rocks or want to chill out with a frozen cocktail. No matter how you drink it, Happy National Margarita Day!

 

Classic Margarita

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1 1/2 Ounces Tequila
  • 1 Ounce Triple Sec
  • 3/4 Ounce Lime Juice
  • Simple Syrup for Added Sweetness if Needed
  • Lime Wedge for Garnish
  • Salt for Rim (If Desired)
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Margarita Glass
  • Short Glass
  • Blender (For Frozen Margaritas)

 

Preparation

Prep Your Rim: Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass. Fill a small plate with salt, and dip the rim into the salt. Set glass aside.

Classic Margarita on the Rocks: In a chilled shaker combine tequila, triple sec, simple syrup (to taste), and lime juice and give it a couple of shakes. Pour over ice, and enjoy!

Frozen Classic Margarita: Add ice and margarita mix to blender. Mix together at a high speed until mixture is fully blended. Pour into prepared glass, and enjoy!
