Drink of the Week: Washington Apple

As the adage goes, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and today we’re mixing up a cocktail to put it to the test. This Washington Apple cocktail is a yummy blend of crisp apple, cranberry, and whiskey. You can make this cocktail neat or over ice, and with the Summer-like temperatures that we’ve been having in coastal Carolina, we’ll take it on ice.

I was introduced to this cocktail by a girlfriend of mine, who is finishing up college this month [Kudos!]. She ordered it at the bar one night when we were having a girl’s night out. I had been nursing my Vodka Collins as we were talking, and she offered me a sip. It had a bite to it. The kind I like. So it has earned a spot in our Drink of the Week spotlight.

I can be a bit picky when it comes to flavored whiskey. You might remember the issue I had with Tennessee Honey a while back that led to the birth of the Whiskey Ginger-Honey Iced Tea. But Crown Royal® Apple is one of the exceptions. It might not be my favorite apple whiskey, but it is one of the better ones I’ve tried.

Pretty much every bartender I know makes a Washington Apple using Pucker® Sour Apple Schnapps. Truthfully, you can’t go wrong with that. You can really use whatever brand of Sour Apple Schnapps you want, I used some DeKuyper® I had left over from Thanksgiving. I typically keep Peach and Apple Schnapps in the liquor cabinet as a standard.

Now let’s show you how you make this delicious Washington Apple cocktail!

 

Washington Apple

Yields: 1 Serving

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1½ Ounces Crown Royal Apple Whiskey
  • 2¼ Ounces Sour Apple Schnapps
  • 3 Ounces Cranberry Juice
  • Orange Twist for Garnish

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Rocks/Old Fashioned Glass
  • Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Washington Apple on the rocks: Pour apple whiskey, sour apple schnapps, and cranberry juice over ice in a rocks glass. Stir together until chilled. Garnish with an orange twist. Enjoy!

Washington Apple neat: Pour apple whiskey, sour apple schnapps, and cranberry juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well until chilled. Pour into a chilled rocks glass, and garnish with an orange twist. Enjoy!

Someone better go tell Charlie Brown. In the affray of Pumpkin Pie and Pumpkin Spiced flavored everything, this martini is the Great Pumpkin we’ve been looking for. Our list of fall cocktail creations includes all kinds of Pumpkin Flavored drinks, but this cocktail is pure and simple deliciousness.

Halloween is one of my favorite times of year. Temperatures begin to cool, there are decorations everywhere, and it becomes socially acceptable to wear black all month without questions. Yes, Halloween is a grand time for haunted houses and parties with friends. My family throws a large Halloween party for friends, family, and neighbors every year. It has become a kind of tradition. So has crafting goolish cocktails and goodies for our guests. Oddly enough, though, we haven’t gotten around to a pumpkin-flavored cocktail until now.

Using pumpkin pie filling and a spiced simple syrup, like Eli Mason Spiced Simple Syrup, makes this the ultimate fall flavored cocktail. We also used straight vodka and added in vanilla instead of using flavored vodka, but feel free to cut corners and use a good vanilla vodka if you like. These flavors really mingle well together in a chilled glass.

This cocktail is served neat in a sugar rimmed cocktail glass [cause there’s no such thing as a “martini glass”]. It makes it even more festive to use colored sugar for Halloween. We suggest using the classic Halloween colors: Black, orange, and green for your sugar rims.

Pumpkin Martini

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces Vodka
  • 1 Tablespoon Pumpkin Pie Filling
  • ½ Ounce Spiced Simple Syrup
  • ½ Teaspoon Vanilla
  • Sugar for Rims
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Cocktail Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker w/ Strainer

 

Preparation

Sugar Rims: Fill a small plate with the sugar of your choice, making sure the sugar on the plate is thick enough to cover the rim of your glass. Run a lemon or lime wedge along the rim of the glass. Dip rim into the sugar to evenly coat. Set aside.

Pumpkin Martini: Add ingredients into a cocktail shaker full of ice. Shake for about 30 seconds or until chilled. Strain into a prepared cocktail glass. Enjoy!

Brio Drink of the week: Spiked Mulled Cider

Even though we won’t feel Fall temperatures here on the NC coast until around November[ish], the Fall/Autumn season officially kicks off on September 22nd! That means we can all start to enjoy our favorite fall flavored cocktails like these mulled ciders. Folks have been spiking mulled cider with hootch for generations, and we’re keeping the tradition alive with these variations of the mulled cider recipe.

Both Corinne and I grew up drinking hot apple cider. It’s kind of a staple in the states where apple orchards are a plenty, or when your grandparents have a cider press like hers do. I’m kind of jealous of that. My elementary schools had field trips to go apple picking and we’d make apple sauce out of them during Girl Scout meetings. It was kind of a big deal. So enjoying cider as a cocktail only seemed logical.

Traditional Mulled Cider is typically nonalcoholic, and you can serve this recipe as such to the kiddies in the house. It can also be served hot or over ice. For our spiked mulled cider, we chose to add in dark rum for one and bourbon for the other. Both came out delicious.

There are a lot of different dark rums to choose from, and we settled on using Gosling’s Black Seal rum [cause hey, maybe we can make some Dark and Stormies later with it]. Basil Hayden’s is one of my sister’s all-time favorite bourbons, and I recommend it for its spicy flavor notes. It can be a bit pricey though at roughly $40 bucks a pop, so if that’s a little out of your comfort zone any good bourbon will do the trick. If you want an American bourbon, try one of these industry winners.

Now let’s show you how you make our spiked mulled cider!

 

Spiked Mulled Cider

Yields: 4 Servings

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Pints Apple Cider
  • 2 Ounces Dark Rum or Bourbon
  • 3 Whole Cloves
  • 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 2 Whole Allspice
  • 1 Thinly Sliced Orange
  • 1 Star Anise
  • Cinnamon Sticks & Apple Slices for Garnish

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Heat Proof Glasses for hot
  • Rocks Glasses for Cold
  • Large Saucepan
  • Metal Strainer
  • Heatproof Pitcher

 

Preparation

Spiked Mulled Cider: Place all of your non-alcoholic ingredients into a saucepan and bring them to a boil. Once it starts to boil, lower the heat down to a simmer for about 5 to 10 minutes to allow the flavors to combine. Remove the pan from the heat and strain into a heatproof pitcher. Remove the cinnamon sticks and discard the remaining waste in the bin. You can enjoy these cocktails cold by allowing the mixture to cool and serving over ice!

Bourbon Mulled Cider: Add the bourbon to a glass, and top with hot cider mix. Stir to combine. Garnish with cinnamon stick and apple slices. Enjoy!

Mulled Cider with Dark Rum: Pour cider mix into glass, and add in the dark rum. Stir together to combine the flavors. Garnish with apple slices. Enjoy!
