Nothing beats the effervescent tingle of a fizz cocktail! This delicious Pom Fizz is a delicious gin cocktail for any occasion.

We’ve done our fair share of gin cocktails here on the Brio Smart Life Blog, but gin fizzes stand in a class of their own.

Like spritz cocktails, fizzes give your cocktails a sparkling mouthfeel that you don’t get from smoother gin cocktails, like martinis. They also tend to be lower in calories.

The traditional Gin Fizz recipe pairs gin, lime juice, club soda, and sometimes egg white. This cocktail does not contain any egg white, making it a diet friendly cocktail.

This Pom Fizz amps up the citrus taste of the classic gin fizz with the slightly sour-sweet taste of pomegranate juice. R.W. Knudsen’s Just Pomegranate Juice is a great choice, but you can use any pomegranate juice you like. Merely adjust the simple syrup accordingly to offset the sugar in the juice.

When selecting the perfect gin to pair with fruity flavors, I tend to favor the botanical essences of New Wave gins. These gins soften the traditional juniper taste of gin by putting emphasis on other herbal flavors.

In the case of Wilder Gin, its flavors are sage and other mountain herbs. When blended with pomegranate juice, these botanical flavors transport you into a little heavenly escape.

Pom Fizz Cocktail

Yields: 2 Servings
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 3 Ounces Wilder Gin
  • 16 Ounces Club Soda
  • 1½ Ounces Pomegranate Juice
  • ½ Ounce Simple Syrup
  • Sliced Lime for Garnish
  • Pomegranate Seeds for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Lowball Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Muddler or Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Pom Fizz: Press sliced lime against the bottom of a lowball glass with a bar spoon or muddler, to release the citrus juice. Add gin, pomegranate juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds, or until chilled to desired temperature.

Pour over ice into prepared lowball glass, and top with club soda. Stir gently to combine. Garnish with pomegranate seeds, and enjoy!

The Azalea Festival is upon us again here in the Port City, and we have a lovely new addition to our list of cocktails for Azalea Fest: The Airlie Gardens Martini.

If you’ve never been to Airlie Gardens, we highly suggest you take a visit. This garden showcases seasonal blossoms, historic and modern sculptures, hosts a summer concert series, and has the most enchanting Christmas light display in the county.

This cocktail takes all the elegance of Airlie and blends it into a delicious pear and lavender gin martini that is perfect for a garden party.

Now if you’re a diehard member of Team Vodka Martini, this martini might not be for you, since the main spirit is gin. Unfortunately, the vodka version just doesn’t have the same mouthfeel or caliber of flavor of its gin counterpart.

But don’t worry Team Vodka Martini, we have quite a few vodka martinis on our blog to satisfy your martini preferences.

Pear juice is by far the most luscious juice I’ve ever had. I have been blown away by the pear cocktails I’ve had in the past few months. Seriously, go try the Pear Necessities cocktail at the Blind Elephant, it is phenomenal.

These cocktails served as an inspiration for the Airlie Gardens Martini. I wanted to create a pear-citrus martini that blended a floral note to it. That is where the lavender came in.

The gorgeous purple hue of the lavender garnish and simple sweetness of lavender honey syrup gives this martini the sophistication you’d want from a garden party cocktail.

It’s simple, sophisticated, and seriously refreshing. That’s the beauty of this Mint Gin Spritz cocktail. In just a few minutes you’ll be sipping on a bright, herbaceous spritz cocktail that is perfect for Spring.

Bubbly cocktails can be fun additions to any cocktail party, and this Mint Gin Spritz has the makings of a real party pleaser. It’s herby, a little bit sweet, and has everything you want in a gin cocktail.

Spritz cocktails are incredibly refreshing and their effervescent nature makes them fun to drink. In this Spritz, we opted to use Prosecco, an Italian sparkling wine, instead of sparkling water or club soda. Prosecco has a fruit palate that pairs well with the herbal notes of gin.

Mint has such a clean and fresh taste. That’s why it makes a great complementary flavor in cocktails. The hints of cucumber in Hendrick’s Gin mixed with muddled mint gives the Mint Gin Spritz cocktail a cool and clean mouthfeel.

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces Hendrick’s Gin
  • 4 Ounces Prosecco
  • 1 Ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • ½ Ounce Simple Syrup
  • 5 to 10 Fresh Sprigs of Mint
  • Lemon Wheel and Mint Sprigs for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Old Fashioned Glass
  • Boston Shaker
  • Muddler or Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Mint Gin Spritz: Muddle mint, simple syrup, and lime juice at the bottom of a Boston Shaker with a muddler or with the back of a spoon. This will release the flavor and color of the mint. Next, add gin to the shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously, and strain over ice into an old fashioned glass. Garnish with a lemon wheel and a sprig or two of fresh mint. Enjoy!

Fun fact for the day: I can speak German. Well, as much German as you can learn in a few semesters in University. Which came in handy for mixing up this Basil Gin Smash cocktail.

The Basil Gin Smash cocktail was first created by Jörg Meyer in his bar called The Lion in Hamburg, Germany back in 2008. As you can imagine, many of its online recipes are in German.

That’s where my awesome translating-ninja-skills came into play to translate this German recipe for our mostly American audience. You’re so welcome!

I find it fitting that we begin the month of March with such a green cocktail. It would make a delicious alternative so some of our other Saint Patrick’s day themed cocktails from the previous year. Especially, since it’s a gin cocktail and not an Irish whiskey cocktail.

This cocktail recipe is made using Hendrick’s Gin, lemon juice, fresh basil, and sugar syrup [a.k.a simple syrup which we have a fantastic recipe for]. If you want to use the gin Jörg recommends for this cocktail, you’ll want to find yourself a bottle of Rutte Dry Gin.

There is a mild bit of contention over crafting the Basil Gin Smash, as its creator wants you to muddle basil for this cocktail. Apparently, that is not well received by everyone. Over muddling can make the cocktail very herby, and it might be my German ancestors working through me, but I rather like that.

The cucumber essence of Hendrick’s Gin and the freshness of the lemon juice and basil create a great balance in this cocktail, which is key. You might need to adjust it to find the right balance for your tastes.

This Basil Gin Smash cocktail is a simple, but elegant cocktail that I plan on making more of in the future. Cheers!

Basil Gin Smash

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces Hendrick’s Gin
  • 1 Ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • ⅔ Ounce Simple Syrup
  • 15 to 20 Fresh Basil Leaves
  • Fresh Basil for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Coupe or Rocks Glass
  • Cocktail or Boston Shaker
  • Muddler or Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Basil Gin Smash: In the bottom of your shaker, dry muddle a handful of basil leaves. Next, add in gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and ice. Shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds. Double strain cocktail into a coupe [for nicer presentation] or a rocks glass. Garnish cocktail with fresh basil leaves. Enjoy!

If you haven’t discovered by now, I am slowly becoming a fan of Gin. The last few gin cocktails we’ve covered took me by surprise. They can be quite delicious, and this Rosemary Citrus Gin and Tonic recipe is a contender.

Gin and Tonics are some of the easiest cocktails you can make. But they can also get a little bland after a while – unless you are willing to experiment.

I first came across the Rosemary Citrus Gin and Tonic from a recipe on Parsnip and Pastries. Their recipe uses Tropicana Tangerine Lemonade, which is loaded with extra sugar that can cause a nasty hangover. For our take on this cocktail, we used a slightly different blend of fresh citrus juices to cut out the added sugar, and paired it with a London Dry Gin and fresh rosemary.

I like my gin and tonics made with London Dry Gin. It’s one of the most popular types of gin around, and it’s not very sweet. That allows the sugar from the citrus juices of our Rosemary Citrus Gin and Tonic to be the star player of this cocktail. Beefeater is a great option if you are new to London Dry gins. I also find it blends well with tonic water, such as Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water.

Rosemary and citrus are a refreshing combination of flavors. They give this cocktail a bright taste, which is perfect for this time of year.

Our Rosemary Citrus Gin and Tonic uses a blend of lemon, white grapefruit, orange, and clementine juices that we muddle with rosemary. We get a box of fresh oranges and grapefruits sent to my house every year by a family friend that lives in Florida. We’d never be able to eat all of them if we tried, so we save a couple large ones just for juicing which works perfectly with this cocktail.

So when I say fresh squeezed ingredients, I really mean it.

Rosemary Citrus Gin & Tonic

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces London Dry Gin
  • 3 Ounces Tonic Water
  • ½ Ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1 Ounce Fresh White Grapefruit Juice
  • 1 Ounce Fresh Orange Juice
  • 1 Large Sprig Fresh Rosemary
  • Halved Clementine
  • Sprig of Rosemary for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Cocktail Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Muddler or Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Rosemary Citrus Gin & Tonic: Muddle halved clementine with a large sprig of rosemary in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Next, add in the gin, citrus juices, and ice. Shake together vigorously until chilled. Strain into cocktail glasses and top with tonic water. Garnish with fresh rosemary sprig. Enjoy!

Raspberries! If you don’t hear Carol Channing’s voice in your head when you hear that word, you just aren’t saying it right.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we’ve been trying all kinds of cocktail recipes that embody that Valentine’s spirit. This Raspberry Blush cocktail is one of those fancy finds.

While vodka is one of the biggest spirits featured in many Valentine’s Day cocktails, we are breaking away from convention by going with gin. For the Raspberry Blush cocktail, you will need a New-Wave Gin, like Hendricks or Martin Miller’s, to accentuate the fruity flavors that make up this scrumptious cocktail.

Diana from Anne of Green Gables was right when she said, “I didn’t know raspberry cordial was so nice.” Neither did I, and it’s also easy to make. All you need are raspberries, lime juice, sugar, and water. Check out this raspberry cordial recipe from Kate MacDonald’s Anne of Green Gables cookbook.

I know sugar or salt rims can be a bit messy and are associated with “girly” drinks, but they really add something to the cocktail’s presentation. Red, pink, white, or a mix of the three would make great choices for giving this cocktail a Valentine’s touch.

The Raspberry Blush is bursting with flavor. The raspberry, lime, and lychee create an exotic taste that will have your mouth falling in love. Pair it with a cucumber gin like Hendrick’s, and you’ve got yourself one damn good cocktail!

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1½ Ounces Gin
  • ½ Ounce Raspberry Cordial
  • 1 Ounce Lime Juice
  • 2½ Ounces Lychee Juice
  • Raspberries for Garnish
  • Color Sugar for Rims [Optional]
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Cocktail Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Bar Spoon

Preparation

Sugar Rims: Fill a small plate with superfine sugar, making sure the sugar on the plate is thick enough to cover the rim of your glass. Run a lemon or lime wedge along the rim of the glass. Dip rim into the sugar to evenly coat. Shake off excess and set aside in the fridge to chill.

Raspberry Blush: Add gin, raspberry cordial, lime juice and Lychee juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for about 30 seconds, or until chilled. Pour into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with chilled or frozen raspberries. Enjoy!

Crafting the Perfect Classic Gimlet

From scurvy-fighting, to Pinterest worthy, this Gimlet, made with Hendricks gin and homemade lime cordial, is a simple cocktail enjoyed by gin lovers everywhere!

This classic Gimlet recipe is just what the doctor ordered

This Gin cocktail has a fascinating story that takes us back to the high seas. The Gimlet was originally invented to battle scurvy. In the 1860’s, Mr. Lauchlin Rose created a lime juice based cordial for sailors to take on long voyages. Sailors, being sailors, began to add liquors such as Gin, Rum, and Whiskey to the cordial and the Gimlet, as we know it, was born.

Lime cordial is a simple combination of lime juice and simple syrup. This mixer can be enjoyed in cocktails or over ice with club soda. You could substitute the lime cordial for 1 ounce of Rose’s Lime Juice, but if you have sulfite allergies I’d stick to homemade, as Rose’s contains sodium metabisulfite.

When crafting the perfect Gimlet, one must pay attention to the type of gin used. Many traditional Gimlet recipes are made with Navy Strength English [either London or Plymouth] gin. Navy Strength gin is 57 percent alcohol, so it can pack a punch.

If you aren’t a fan of that, a New Wave gin, like Hendrick’s, might be right up your alley. New Wave gins put less emphasis on juniper and more on other botanical flavors, so if your issue with Gin is the juniper, this might be the type of gin to try.

With a tip off to Victorian style and curiosity, Hendrick’s gin is as delicious as their packaging is pretty. I’m guilty of keeping a box or two because of the artwork. I’m a fan of Hendrick’s because its cucumber flavor makes this gin more enjoyable. It also pairs deliciously with our homemade lime cordial in this classic Gimlet recipe.

So thank a sailor next time you raise a glass and enjoy a Gimlet.

Since I was little, I’ve always associated kiwis with summertime. We always seemed to have a box of New Zealand kiwis on the kitchen counter in the summer months. These fuzzy little fruits are one of the world’s healthiest foods. They are packed with vitamins and antioxidants that help make our bodies healthy and strong – and they taste good too!

I’ve been looking to do a summer fruit based cocktail that wasn’t a margarita, or sangria. That’s when I came across a recipe for a Kiwi Mojito from Kitchen Confidante. Being not the biggest fan of rum, I used this recipe as a launching point for the Kiwi Gin Collins. The first Gin drink I ever liked was a Tom Collins, so I decided to get a little creative and merge my favorite summer fruit with one of my favorite cocktails.

Kiwi Gin Collins Recipe

We like to make a lot of our mixers and ingredients from scratch in the Brio Smart Life Test Kitchen, so I mixed up a batch of our easy made simple syrup and whipped up a quick kiwi puree for this recipe. Store bought purees and syrups are fine to use if you don’t have time to make your own, but they might contain extra sugar and junk preservatives than you might like for this cocktail.

Kiwi Gin cocktails might be my new favorite cocktails. Strained or not Strained, this Kiwi Gin Collins has the right amount of sweet and sour with that herbal kick you get from the gin. Grab yourself a glass and let’s get to whipping up some delicious drink of the week cocktails!

 

Kiwi Gin Collins

Yields: 1 Serving

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2.7 Ounces Gin
  • 1.5 Ounces Kiwi Puree
  • 1 Ounce Lime Juice
  • 2 Ounces Club Soda
  • ½ Ounce Simple Syrup
  • Mint Sprigs for Garnish

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Highball Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Spoon
  • Strainer [Optional]
  • Blender [For Kiwi Puree]

 

Preparation

Kiwi Puree: Slice off the top and bottom of two to three kiwis. Next, take a spoon and insert it under the fruit skin and run it all the way around the kiwi. This will separate the skin from the fruit in an easy stroke. Once the skin has been separated from the fruit, simply squeeze out the kiwi and discard the peel in the bin. Take your freshly naked kiwis and pop them into a blender and blend until smooth.

Kiwi Gin Collins: Fill glass with desired amount of ice. In a cocktail shaker, add gin, lime juice, simple syrup, and kiwi puree. Shake that baby up until the ingredients are well mixed. If you don’t want the kiwi seeds in your cocktail, place a strainer over the cocktail shaker and pour the cocktail over ice. Otherwise, pour the entire mixture over ice and top with chilled club soda or seltzer water. Stir together with a spoon, add more ice as needed and garnish with a few sprigs of mint. Enjoy!

Drink Of The Week: Rosemary Gin Fizz

There’s nothing more comforting than sitting on the porch on warm days and nights with a good drink. Down south, sipping cocktails, like this Drink of the Week, is a Springtime and Summertime staple.

After her death, a friend of Julia Child’s told a story of when a sommelier asked her to name her favorite wine, she replied, “Gin.”. Obviously, the Queen of French Cooking [and butter…sorry Paula] knew how to party. Much like Julia Child, we love us some Gin here in the Brio kitchen, and this Rosemary Gin Fizz is to die for!

Folks have a love-hate relationship with gin. I have heard it described as “Christmas in a bottle” for its pine-like aroma, and I happen to agree. I love the smell of gin. Though I will never be one of those folks who can drink gin straight, some gin cocktails happen to be my favorites.

This Rosemary Gin Fizz happens to be one of them.

The Gin Fizz has many variations. They come in numerous flavors, with different ingredients, some of which include using eggs. It’s added for frothiness, but all I can say is – YUCK! I can’t understand how people can drink raw eggs, let alone add them to alcohol.

In this Rosemary Gin Fizz – you guessed it – we added the herbal taste of Rosemary to the mix. We also opted for honey instead of granulated sugar.

Honey is delicious, nutritious and it’s healthier than regular sugar. Plus, you can use creamed, raw, or infused honey, like elderflower or thyme honey, for this recipe. We used Vintage Bee Creamed Honey. I personally love the way their Raw Creamed Honey with Lemon tastes, and since it’s made here in North Carolina. It also pairs very well with whiskey in a Hot Toddy.

Rosemary Gin Fizz

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1½ Ounces Gin
  • 3 Ounces Club Soda
  • Juice of 1 Small Lemon
  • 3 Sprigs of Fresh Rosemary
  • ½ Teaspoon Honey
  • Lemon Wedge for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Lowball or Stemless Wine Glass
  • Muddler or Spoon

 

Preparation

Rosemary Gin Fizz: Muddle a sprig of rosemary, lemon juice, and honey together on the bottom of a Stemless Wine glass, with a muddler or spoon. Fill glass halfway with ice, and pour gin over the muddled mixture. Stir together with spoon, and top with club soda. Continue stirring for a few seconds and let settle. Garnish with rosemary and lemon wedge.

The North Carolina Azalea Festival takes place here in Wilmington every year, and we crafted a Drink of the Week that captures the heart of the festival: The Azalea Belle.

One of the Azalea festival’s most popular traditions are the Azalea Belles, young ladies that wear hoop-skirted antebellum dresses and serve as hostesses and guides during the Azalea Festival Garden Tour.

This tradition has been going on for over 40 years and has become one of the most iconic images of the festival and of the Port City.

We tried to capture that essence of bright colorful dresses and Southern hospitality in a combination of Grapefruit juice and Gin, with just a touch of extra herbal sweetness from a homemade Rosemary Simple Syrup.

Azalea Belle

Yields: 2 Servings
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 5 Ounces Gin
  • 5 Ounces Pink Grapefruit Juice
  • 1.5 Teaspoon Rosemary Simple Syrup
  • Grapefruit Wedge for Garnish
  • Rosemary Sprig for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Stemless Wine Glass
  • Snifter Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker or Tumbler

 

Preparation

The Azalea Belle: Add a few ice cubes to stemless wine glasses, and set aside. Fill shaker half way with ice, and add in gin, juice, and 1.5 teaspoon of the rosemary syrup.

Shake it all up, and strain into glasses. Finish the drink off with a section of grapefruit and a rosemary sprig for garnish. Enjoy!
