Let’s get cozy with a spiked tea recipe

With January declared “Hot Tea Month,” it only seems appropriate to share a special spiked tea recipe! Staying in the spirit, we’re mixing up an interesting Italian Hot Toddy recipe called Amaretto Tea.

If you’re still in hibernation mode, I don’t blame you. The cold weather that winter brings is enough to make me scurry under a pile of blankets. While we still have a couple months to go until the temperatures start to rise, enjoying a hot cup of tea is one sure way to warm you up.

Tea has been the drink of choice for many over the thousands of years since its discovery in Asia. There are over 3,000 varieties and five basic categories of tea: black, green, oolong, white, and puer. With this many options, it’s no wonder that tea is only second to water for the most consumed beverage in the world! (Can you believe that coffee drinkers?!)

Amaretto Tea is sure to hit the spot when you’re craving a warm cocktail with a unique flavor. Amaretto is a liqueur the originated in Saronno, Italy and its name in Italian means “a little bitter.” The meaning behind its name is deceiving though as the taste is described as a rich, velvety almond flavor. It is made using a base of almonds, apricot pits, or a combination of the two.

Keep the tea for this recipe basic (Lipton’s works wonderfully) so you don’t mix flavors that would compete with the amaretto. Tea contains tannin which makes it acidic, while the amaretto and cream are sweet. This helps to balance out the flavors. I happened to think this combination tastes similar to a chai latte but with the extra kick of liqueur.

Even though the ingredients in this recipe have a detailed background, the drink itself is very simple to make. So, when you’re cozy in your house on a cold winter night, give this hot toddy a try. I promise it won’t disappoint.

Amaretto Tea

Yields: 1 Serving
Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 6 Ounces Hot Tea
  • 2 Ounces Amaretto Almond Liqueur
  • 1-2 Ounces Cream
  • Cinnamon for Garnish
Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Café glass
  • Spoon

Preparation

Amaretto Tea : Pour hot tea into a cafe glass. Add amaretto and cream. Stir everything together. Garnish with Cinnamon and enjoy.

How to make an Old Fashioned Hot Toddy with lemon and honey

Curling up with a nice Hot Toddy is one great way to beat the cold this winter, and to watch your favorite Harry Potter movie(s). It is also a favorite cold remedy for its soothing effect on those who are feeling achy and congested.

In fact, hot toddies have been used for decades as a folk remedy for the common cold. Why you might ask? Well, alcohol dilates your blood vessels, making it easier for your mucous membranes to fight off your cold/infection. Combined with the steam power of hot tea, lemon, and honey you have a deliciously sippable decongestant.

Hot Toddies have been a family natural cure-all for generations. My mom makes these whenever someone in the house has a chest cold or a sore throat. It’s kind of like magic. The tea warms you up while the honey and whiskey soothes and helps you sleep.

According to the Hot Toddy experts, the type of whiskey you should use depends on your symptoms: Use bourbon if you’re just treating congestion or a sore throat, or use Irish whiskey if you have a persistent cough.

I prefer my hot toddies to be made using a strong black tea. Irish or Scottish Breakfast tea is heaven with a splash of Jameson, but Earl Grey makes a good choice as well. This is just my go to, but many types of tea pair very nicely with Whiskey. Ginger tea adds an extra spice palate to the mixture that will warm you up, especially when you pair it with an American whiskey.

Old Fashioned Hot Toddy

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Black Tea Bags
  • 1½ Cups Boiling Water
  • 1-2 Ounces of Whiskey
  • 4 Tbsp of Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1-2 Tbsp of Honey (For Optional Sweetness)

Glassware You’ll Need:

  • Coffee Mug
  • Tea Cup

 

Preparation

Old Fashioned Hot Toddy: Bring water to a boil in a kettle, or place the mug in the microwave for 1 to 1½ minutes. Remove the water from the heat, and add in the tea bags. Allow the tea to steep for about 3-5 minutes, then add whiskey and lemon juice. Stir together, and add honey to taste. Enjoy!
