This mixture of Vodka and Kahlua has been pleasing the American cocktail palate since the outbreak of the Cold War. It’s a bit of a versatile cocktail that’s best enjoyed as a Nightcap.

This simple, 2-ingredient Black Russian cocktail has everything you’d want in a classic nightcap.

Everyone loves a good nightcap! They are like the cherry on top of a perfect evening. This simple, 2-ingredient Black Russian cocktail has everything you’d want in your bedtime drink.

As the original “Russian” cocktail, the Black Russian has quite the history behind it. The cocktail was developed in the 1940s by Gustave Tops, a bartender at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, when he created the drink for Perle Mesta, the American ambassador to Luxembourg.

Mesta was known as “the hostess with the mostes” for throwing some of the best parties in Washington D.C. It was at these parties where she supposedly served Black Russians to her guests. Thanks to Mesta, the Black Russian took off in popularity and soon after its sister cocktail, The White Russian, was born.

The Black Russian is considered a classic vodka cocktail. In fact, only the Black Russian is listed as official in the Contemporary Classics section, while the White Russian is listed as a variation of the drink recipe. Both variations are categorized as digestifs, also known as after dinner cocktails.

Traditionally, this cocktail contained five parts vodka to two parts coffee liqueur, per IBA specified ingredients. The vodka was then poured over ice cubes in an old-fashioned glass and then topped with the coffee liqueur. Today, there is much more liberty with the ratios of ingredients use. Take advantage of this and create the perfect cocktail to suit your palate.

  • 2 Ounces Vodka
  • 1 Ounce Coffee Liqueur

Preparation

Classic Black Russian: Add vodka and coffee liqueur into a mixing glass with ice. Stir till chilled. Strain into a Rocks glass, and add a few ice cubes. Enjoy!

This classic White Russian cocktail is the perfect 3-ingredient after dinner nightcap.

Everyone loves a good nightcap! They are like the cherry on top of a perfect evening. And this simple, 3-ingredient White Russian cocktail is the perfect cocktail to add to your list of favorite nightcaps.

The White Russian cocktail has an interesting history. Father of the “Russian” cocktails, Gustave Tops, created the cocktail back in the late 1940’s for Perle Mesta, then U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg, at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels. It was later popularized [and saved from near extinction] thanks to the movie The Big Lebowski, where The Dude throws back several White Russians throughout the movie.

The simplicity of its ingredients makes the White Russian the perfect little nightcap. There are many different flavor variations for it as well. Pinterest is filled with flavored White Russians from classic Vanilla all the way to Pumpkin Spice White Russians.

Many classic recipes for the White Russian use a coffee liqueur like Kahlua. I recommend Patrón XO Café Dark Cocoa for its hints of chocolatey flavor and jazzier taste. Other ways you can mix it up is to substitute milk or Baileys Original Irish Cream for the heavy cream.

Cream or milk-based cocktails aren’t for everyone. Sometimes they can upset stomachs, and add extra calories to your cocktails that you may want to avoid if you’re trying to lose weight or don’t want a hangover. But lucky for you this lovely cocktail has a creamless alternative: The Black Russian.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces Vodka
  • 1 Ounce Coffee Liqueur
  • ½ Ounce Heavy Cream

Preparation

This Espresso Martini is a simply delicious nightcap that is perfect for coffee lovers everywhere. Add a few tablespoons of Vanilla Gelato to the glass and make it Affogato!

The Perfect Espresso Martini [Affogato] Nightcap

Coffee is one of those bases that makes great cocktails from Black Russians to Irish Coffees. And when it comes to coffee, there’s nothing I love more than espresso. So when we came across these Espresso Martinis, my heart sang with the joy of a thousand tenors.

I don’t always have a nightcap, but when I do this cocktail is at the top of my list. This Espresso Martini is one of those perfectly caffeinated cocktails, that blends the taste of coffee liqueur, vodka, and freshly brewed espresso.

I save the good stuff [the bottles from my splurge list] for my favorite cocktails. For my perfect Espresso Martini recipe, I used Van Gogh Vodka and Patrón XO Café Dark Cocoa [it’s a chocolate coffee liqueur made with tequila instead of rum like Kahlua].

One of my favorite treats is Affogato, chocolate or vanilla gelato [you can do it with ice cream too] topped with freshly brewed espresso. So I Frankensteined them together and made an Espresso Martini Affogato. I just had to, and it was delicious! To make this nightcap affogato, add one to two large spoonfuls of gelato to the bottom of your glass and pour the espresso martini over top.

Espresso Martini

Yields: 1 Serving

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Ounces Vodka
  • 1 Ounce Espresso
  • ½ Ounce Coffee Liqueur
  • ¼ Ounce Simple Syrup
  • 1-2 tbsp Vanilla Gelato [Optional]
  • Espresso Beans for Garnish

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Coupe or Cocktail Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker

Preparation

Perfect Espresso Martini: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, and pour all of your ingredients on top. Give it a good shake, until chilled. Pour into chilled coupe or cocktail glass. Garnish with espresso beans, enjoy!

Make it Affogato: Prepare cocktail as above. Add one to two tablespoons of Vanilla Gelato to the bottom of a coupe glass, and pour Espresso martini on top. Garnish with espresso beans, enjoy!

We have reached the end of National Iced Tea Month and this last themed drink of the week is sure to be your favorite. Sip on this happy marriage of Chambord and Iced Tea in our Tipsy Raspberry Iced Tea Cocktail.

We are so happy National Iced Tea Month came, but we are sad to see it leave. So we are going to end this National Iced Tea Month Cocktail Series with a bang! It is Fourth of July Weekend after all. We are looking forward to some R&R, family time, and of course fireworks. We have some amazing fireworks displays here in the Port City and surrounding beach communities that would make Gatsby jealous.

The Tipsy Raspberry Iced Tea was inspired by my first experience tasting Chambord, a raspberry liqueur. On its own, I found Chambord too sweet to drink straight, but when paired with the strong, full-bodied taste of black tea, the raspberry liqueur became much more tolerable for my sweet tooth. Which is why the Simple Syrup is optional in this recipe. I included it for some of our readers who prefer sweet iced tea to unsweetened tea.

Since this is Fourth of July Weekend, this Tipsy Raspberry Iced Tea recipe was made as a pitcher cocktail. Meaning the recipe should yield 6 to 8 servings when served in highball or collins glasses. You’ll get much more out of the recipe if you serve them in mini mason jars or old fashioned glasses, though. Nothing says ‘American chic’ like drinking fancy cocktails out of mason jars. Let’s say Cheers to the birth of our nation with a glass of Tipsy Raspberry Iced Tea.

Iced Tea Cocktail Series

 

Tipsy Raspberry Iced Tea

Yields: 6-8 Serving

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 12 Ounces Chambord Liquor
  • 4 Ounces Vodka
  • 64 Ounces Black Tea
  • Simple Syrup [Optional]
  • Raspberries & Orange Slices for Garnish

Glassware and Items You’ll Need:

  • Highball Glass
  • Tea Pot & Pitcher
  • Bar Spoon

 

Preparation

Pre-prep the Black Tea: Fill a kettle with 64 Ounces [that’s 8 cups] of water and bring it to a boil. Take kettle off the heat and pour water into a pitcher with about 4 tea bags [or the equivalent of loose tea in a tea strainer]. Steep tea until the water cools down. Remove the tea bag [or strainer] and chill tea in the Fridge for at least 15 to 20 minutes.

 

Tipsy Raspberry Iced Tea: Remove pitcher from fridge, and add ice to chilled Iced Tea. Pour in Chambord and vodka into the iced tea, and add desired amount of simple syrup [Optional]. Stir together, and add in raspberries, oranges, and more ice if needed. Pour mixture into high ball glasses, and garnish drinks with a couple of raspberries and a slice or two of orange. Squeeze the oranges for added flavor. Enjoy!
